What kind of Canon film camera do you have? If it is an EOS version, then you would be well advised to get a Canon DSLR because you already have lenses that you can use. The new "prosumer" version cameras (like the 40D and 50D) offer a lot of "bang for the buck" and are around $1500. A good Canon flash will set you back another $300-400. If you can't afford that much, the Canon Digital Rebel series cameras are very good for around $400-$900 depending on the model you choose. Good luck to you! Happy shooting!

A top of the line Nikon such as the D3, or if you have limited funds then a good used D1, you should find a D1 for under $400.00. Just make sure it's from a reputable shop.

I would recommend an S.L.R
I started out with a Nikon D80. I loved it. I still use it sometimes. The quality is great and it's not too expensive. Since you are starting out, I would maybe even suggest a Nikon D60. A good flash would also be a good thing to get.

good luck
